your iMac only supports sata 3G - higher speed SSD's (6G) are a waste of money and might give you compatibility problems.

if you replace existing HDD with SSD you will most likely get Temp sensor problems and spinning up Fans.

I did just that with my 27" late 2009 iMac. I bought all my SSDs from Other World Computing I have two other smaller SSDs for my business with one being a Parallels Win 7 disk. I have a 480 G for my applications and a second 480 G for my data for photography. It just seems to be the way OS X works and I don'tknow why it does it some time and not others.Īnytime you must access data from a drive that is a spinning disk you will have a delay in performance and more of a delay if it needs to spin up. It even happens to me with my external backup spinning disk. This will happen even if the computer is not accessing that spinning hard disk. The only drawback with mixing SSDs with conventional hard drives is that your computer may pause when disk operations take place while the conventional disk speeds up from a paused position. I don't have SuperDuper, so I don't know. I think Carbon Cloner will allow a clean transfer from your existing disk. The only drive I have that is a spinning disk is the external Time Machine backup drive.

If I use the SSD as the startup drive can I use this ability to replace the Recovery Partition if I use Super Duper to clone my existing HD? Also, when I upgrade to Mavericks do I need to install Snow Leopard first or is Mavericks a new stand alone OS and can I also have Mavericks on the HD?Ĭan I use the SSD to run apps like Aperture, CS6 etc etc. Although I understand that the SSD is very fast I will admit I'm not totally understanding of all it's abilities when used as a second drive.
